Very great experience! Enjoyed getting away from technology and relaxing. Wish we stayed longer than a weekend.
If you're going to work here absolutely don't I read the reviews here and was like nah it can't be that bad drove 600 miles to find out the "room" you get is a bed bug flea infested cabin in the woods and all the rooms there have no lock on them so anyone can go in and steal items. The wifi was a joke. If you don't believe me then go for it.
If you are looking for a real dude ranch, this is the place! We had the best time riding horses, team pinning, and participating in a cattle drive. The food can not be beat. The rooms were spectacular with a gorgeous view of the mountains. We have been to the French Broad Outpost ranch twice and we will return again.
I have noticed a lot of negative reviews by past employees. So I thought as a past employee, I would write an honest review. Before I begin, I would like to state that I worked here for only 6 weeks. May-June of 2016. For those of you who are talking about the deplorable conditions the staff live in are utterly ridiculous. You are going to work on a dude ranch in a remote location of the Smokey Mountains. The economy of this area still looks like the recession ten years ago. This area of the country does not have the means to be as modern and state of the art. You must also keep in mind that it is not the four seasons in a tropical paradise, and you are an employee not a paying guest. The lifestyle is very rugged and basic. You do not get a new memory foam mattress in a spacious beautifully furnished room. But you do get a CLEAN not bed bug infested bed with storage space for your belongings. If someone steals from you that is a terrible thief since there is no way to avoid you throughout the day. The staff's quarters are all what YOU make of it. You can make your own comfortable hangout in the staff's quarters, there are cleaning products around to make your room clean to your standards. There's a spacious area for staff to hike and fish. If you can't handle isolation do not go there. I actually do not know what you're thinking if you expect to be texting your buddies and updating your snapchat story and instagram, binge watching netflix while working on a DUDE RANCH IN A REMOTE PART OF THE COUNTRY SUN UP TO SUN DOWN. Personally, I loved being away from people and took advantage of it as a time to reflect on my life in the real world. I was able to call my loved ones on the landline nightly. I watched DVDs, read books. I checked my email and face book messages. I listened to my ipod. I was not working with the horses, so I did not work as many hours. Unfortunately I did not work out here due to personality conflict. I recommend coming here with an open mind of what you need to survive and that this is a job not a vacation. To conclude, Shawn and JoAnn are trying to run a business and you are working for them. They worked hard to build their dream and you are being entitled and disrespectful if you expect them to cater to you for being so gracious as to accept the job offer you applied for. And once again, I cannot stress enough that this is a ranch that is isolated so keep in mind that they have more or less developed their own way of life and thinking. They are their own society. I mean the ranch is 10 minutes behind EST because of a slow clock in the kitchen.
We spend a half week at the Ranch and has a wonderful anniversary trip. Shawn and JoAnn were so gracious and hospitable and went the extra mile to treat us like family. We were taught excellent riding techniques by Shawn and the wranglers. They took a great history and found out that I had experienced two rough horses in the past and paired me with the most perfect horse for my needs. The wranglers were patient with me about relearning better habits and not being so fearful. The ladies in the kitchen made such wonderful meals and service was spectacular. It was a lot of fun and we'd like to come back and bring others with us.
